According to Aram Sawatdiwichai, Assistant Secretary of the King Rama IV Foundation, descendants of King Rama IV led by Lady Butree Weerawaithaya asked royal permission from King Rama IX to build a monument to commemmorate the 200 th anniversary of the birth of King Rama IV which was to be celebrated on 18 October 2004. The construction of the King Rama IV monument and surrounding area was supported by the Fine Arts Department and relevant government agencies and in 2007 the monument was built.
HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of the monument on Tuesday 20 May 2014.
The King Rama IV Monument is situated in front of Saranrom Royal Palace which formerly housed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The palace was built by King Rama IV who planned to abdicate the throne and hand power to his oldest son who was about to reach legal age, and then wished to use the palace as his residence. However, the prince passed away in 1868 before construction of the palace was completed.
